Emotion Regulation

​If emotions are getting between you and the life you want, you can benefit from DBT.

Emotions help us when it comes to making decisions, understanding others, taking actions to create a happier life, and keeping ourselves safe. 

Research shows that we are biologically wired to have all kinds of feelings and some people experience emotions more intensely than others.  In other words, we are born this way and that's okay.

Emotion regulation includes both positive and negative emotions like anxiety, hopelessness, fear, excitement, love, envy, jealousy, sadness and happiness.  Sometimes we respond to our emotions with a short-term behavior such as poor decision-making, problematic behavior, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or eating disorders that in the long-term:
  • Strain or break relationships
  • Cause harmful or permanent consequences
  • Produce shame or regret
  • Impede progress toward life goals

Inability to effectively regulate emotions can be the cause of depression, anxiety, feeling misunderstood, and a sense of isolation.
 
You have probably already tried different solutions to change how you manage your emotions. Maybe you've looked for reasons in your past, tried avoiding situations or people, or even just told yourself to "STOP IT". 

In DBT when we think of emotion, we consider two different variables:
  • Emotion Sensitivity = the amount of "stuff" needed to get an emotion started
  • Emotion Intensity = how "big" your emotional reaction is once it gets started

At the heart of DBT we learn new ways to regulate and respond to our emotions.  By teaching and practicing different skills, we focus on changing the relationship you have with your emotions.

​Anxiety has played an important role in our survival as a species, Worrying about danger forced our ancestors to take fewer risks, seek safety and focus on doing things well.  A certain amount of anxiety is also what helps motivate you to do a good job at work or spend time preparing for a test. However, when anxiety begins to manifest randomly and without warning, it can become inhibiting and life destroying.

We understand that having BPD means you were born more sensitive to emotion, and when you have an emotion it takes longer to get through it. Due to this sensitivity and intensity of emotion you might feel like you don't have the right tools in your toolset to regulate your emotions in a way that benefits you in the long term.
